Crude skids to 10-week low
LONDON (SHARECAST) - Crude oil futures settled at the lowest level in 10 weeks on Friday after news that Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak would step down after three decades in power.
Crude oil for March delivery closed down $1.15 at $85.58 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude fell to an intraday low of $85.16 a barrel in midday trading as tensions in Egypt in eased.
Prices had been pushing higher on concern that tensions could lead to disruption to the Suez Canal. However Friday's news knocked recent fears on their head.
Crude oil was also pressured by the stronger dollar as was gold.
The yellow metal ended lower on Friday on news of Mubarak’s resignation.
Gold for April delivery retreated $2.10 to settle at $1,360.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
